Rwanda: Healing After Genocide : The people of Rwanda have been scarred by genocide but not defined by it. The 1994 massacre decimated the male population and left thousands of survivors as widows and orphans. Rape was a tool of war that brutalized women who then sometimes contracted HIV/AIDS.The nation's pursuit of reconciliation and healing serves as an example to the world of the power of forgiveness and restitution. More Than A Relish: The Story Behind the Name : Why "More Than A Relish?" What "more" is there to this recent start-up in the heart of Norfolk's inner-city?

For owner Colleen James, the bottom line is more than money. She also wants to profit (or as she might say, "bless") the lives of the people who work with her. So along with a paycheck she adds liberal dashes of mentoring and encouragement.

A strong Christian, Colleen believes that elbow grease and prayer oil the gears of growth, and that God will provide the wisdom and resources she needs.

Case in point: to get her business off the ground, Colleen required a kitchen certified for food production. We're talking big-time expense here–unless she could plug into an existing facility. But where would she find such a place? Right down the street, so it happened. The pastor of nearby Park Place Baptist Church invited her to use their professional kitchen when the time came to refresh her stock. Amen!

So far Colleen's staff is small, like the acorn's promise of an oak tree. Norma Wyatt (in photos) is Colleen's second hire and, for now, her sole employee. Not surprisingly, after hours spent working side by side the two have become more than employer and employee. They have also become friends. (Update: In 2007 Norma discovered she needed a kidney transplant. Though she's on a transplant list, as of 2008 she has not yet found a match, and exhaustion from her illness prevents her from working. Colleen now has 3-4 other helpers from her low-income neighborhood or similar ones nearby.)

It's this savor of relationship that makes More Than A Relish so special. Yes, people do love the product. It's tasty and robust, good enough to eat straight from the jar. But there's more...

In our tech-driven society where it's easy to feel more like a number than a person, Colleen's down-home warmth stands out. The fact is, talking to her you feel like she welcomes more than your business, she also welcomes you. Now relish that!

ODU Nurses @ Village Pointe : Gifts come in a variety of packages, and how we love receiving them. But not all gifts come in boxes and bags, wrapped with ribbons and bows.

The nurses from Old Dominion University who visited us at Village Pointe Apartments were gifts of a different sort. They came with heart-pumping exercises and good advice to keep us safe and healthy. But that wasn't all they brought.

Along with their expertise and time they gave us perhaps the best gift of all–friendship and kindness. Thank you, special ladies. We appreciate you.

RSG Commissioning 2008 : Congratulations grads, faculty, families and staff on a job well done! Here are some tips to assist you on this site.

PLEASE NOTE: Colors may appear differently on the web and on different computer systems (Mac vs PC) and monitors. If these online photos look "washed out" on your monitor, they won't look that way in a print. The original digital files have rich colors and contrast.

VIEWING PHOTOS:

•To enlarge a thumbnail image, click on the thumbnail. A larger image will appear at the right. Click on that larger photo to enlarge it even more. To return to the page with all the photos, click the enlarged photo once again. Voila! You're back to the thumbnails.

•To advance through the gallery pages, click "Next" to the right of "Page __ of __" {above the thumbnails). You can also click the button with the down triangle immediately to the right of "Page ___" to access a specific page.

•To see a slideshow, so you don't have to squint at thumbnails, click "Slideshow" in the upper right hand corner. Once in that mode you can select settings for manual or timed (automatic) advance. (I like manual so I can control the amount of time I view each photo.)

•ORDERING PHOTOS:

Click "Buy: this photo" (in the toolbar above the large photo at right) to select that particular photo. Click "multiple photos" to order several different photos.

When choosing the size print you want, make sure you also select the print finish you want, such as glossy, matte or lustre. (Lustre is a "pearl" finish that's halfway between glossy and matte. Fingerprints aren't as visible as they are on glossy, and colors look richer than than they do on matte.)

Make sure your print size reveals all you want of the photo. Please note that some photos may need to be sized as 9X12 to prevent cropping out an element of the photo that you want to include. (Click "Compact Cameras" and select "9X12".) You'll be able to see what the format keeps and crops at checkout. Use the "CROP" button to adjust the crop. Check out these two links for quick tips on cropping photos and using the crop tool:

1) Deciding on the best crop for your photo

2) How to use the cropping tool
